International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Video portraits of TerraQ women scientists

Women are still underrepresented in the sciences. According to UNESCO, only one third of all people employed in science worldwide are women. Especially in the natural sciences and technical fields, there is still a great imbalance between female and male researchers.

To change this, the United Nations launched the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in 2015. The aim is to promote full and equal access and participation of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM subjects).

TerraQ also contributes with gender equality activities to removing still existing hurdles for equal opportunities in science. On the occasion of the UN Day of Women and Girls in Science, video portraits of five female scientists from the Collaborative Research Centre are presented. They represent very different areas of the research network and can be role models for female pupils and students and motivate them to pursue a scientific career in STEM subjects.
